Improving the Dropbox sharing experience

Role: Lead Product Designer

Project brief

A significant portion of new signups (42%) came from the mobile share receiver experience. However, the process of accessing shared content in the app was lengthy and unnecessarily complicated.

It took an average of 22 steps for a user without an account to view a shared file, 40 steps to save it to their own account, and 51 steps to share it again.

Simplifying this process was important because viewing shared files is often the first experience new users have with Dropbox, and sharing content on mobile is a high-value action for the company. Furthermore, to support our customers users should be able to easily view, download, or save shared files for later access and retrieval.

Business impact

The successful redesign led to a significant reduction in the steps required for various actions (viewing a shared file from 22 to 4 steps, saving from 40 to 10 steps, and sharing from 51 to 11 steps), enhancing the user experience. This resulted in increased user satisfaction and a 3% increase in total Weekly Active Users (WAU), directly impacting the bottom line and aligning with Dropbox's business objectives.
